Are You Practicing Portion Control?

You can enjoy your meals while making small adjustments to the amounts of food on your plate. Cutting back on empty calories from added sugars and solid fats gives you more room to enjoy fruits and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products.

USDA's MyPlate recommends you "enjoy your food, but eat less."

  • Take small samples of your favorite foods from a buffet and fill the rest of your plate with fruits and vegetables.
  • Check and compare nutrition information about the foods you are eating.
  • Prepare food at home so you can control what is in your meals.
  • Use a smaller plate, bowl or cup.
