Nutrition Q & A
Are There Vegetarian Options for the 2010 Dietary Guidelines Eating Patterns?
Vegetarian adaptations of the USDA food patterns are included in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010. The sample vegetarian food patterns allow for additional flexibility in food group choices. The lacto-ovo vegetarian pattern includes milk and milk products and eggs with adaptations in the protein food group. The vegan adaptation contains only plant foods with changes in both the dairy foods and protein groups. These vegetarian adaptations represent healthy eating patterns, however, they do include fortified foods as sources for some nutrients.
For sample vegetarian eating patterns, see Appendices 8 and 9 in Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2010.
