Nutrition Q & A
What is Basmati Rice?
Once you had to go to an Indian or Middle Eastern specialty store to find basmati rice. Now it's gone mainstream and can be found in many supermarkets. Basmati rice is an aromatic, long-grain rice with a distinctive aroma and flavor much like that of popcorn or roasted nuts. When cooked, it expands only lengthwise which makes long, slender grains that are dry and fluffy. Basmati rice is now grown in the United States and is available as brown or white rice.
