Recent Rain Storms Flooded My Kitchen. Can I Salvage Any of the Food?
UDSA's Food Safety and Inspection Service recommends the following:
- Throw out any food that may have come into contact with flood water.
- Throw away any food that is not in a water proof container if it may have come into contact with flood water.
- Inspect canned foods and discard any food in damaged cans. Look for dents, rust, holes, leaks or swelling. Undamaged, commercially prepared foods in all-metal cans and retort pouches (for example, flexible, shelf-stable juice or seafood pouches) can be saved if you carefully follow the proper cleaning procedure.
