Should Meat and Poultry Be Rinsed before Cooking?

Food safety is very important these days. While it is not necessary to rinse meat and poultry prior to seasoning and cooking, there are important steps to prepare your food to keep it safe. Keep your meat and poultry in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it. Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds prior to handling food.

Use a separate cutting board for raw meat and poultry to prevent cross-contamination. After preparing meat and poultry and before moving on to the next food, wash cutting boards, utensils, counter tops and dishes with soapy water.
