Nutrition Q & A

Should I Give up Caffeine Now That I Am Pregnant?

You do not need to give up caffeine all together. Because there are mixed research studies on the effects of caffeine during pregnancy, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends keeping your intake below 300 milligrams per day. This is about one or two servings of coffee, tea or other caffeine-containing beverages per day. Beverages that contain caffeine include coffee, teas (green and black), and some carbonated beverages such as colas and energy drinks. Keep in mind that, for some pregnant women, caffeine may cause nausea and heartburn.
