CHICAGO – The American Dietetic Association Foundation will honor leaders in the dietetics profession at its annual gala on Monday, November 8, as part of ADA's 2010 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo in Boston, Mass. The 2010 ADAF Gala will be at the Westin Boston Waterfront. The theme is Kids Eat Right: Orchestrating a Healthier Future, highlighting the joint ADA/ADA Foundation's "Kids Eat Right" initiative.

Media are encouraged to attend the ADAF Gala. E-mail or call 800/877-1600, ext. 4769, for more information.

"The ADA Foundation is honored to celebrate the outstanding contributions these individuals and organizations have made to the field of dietetics and the improved health of Americans," said registered dietitian and ADAF Chair Judith L. Dodd. "Now more than ever, as our nation continues to face both hunger and obesity epidemics, the registered dietitian will be called on as the food and nutrition expert, and the generosity and dedication of these honorees will help ensure our industry has the leaders it needs to succeed."

Dodd added: "As the world's largest meeting of food and nutrition experts, ADA's Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo provides the perfect opportunity to recognize these leaders, demonstrating our shared commitment to the health of the American public, particularly our nation's children."

This year's ADAF honorees include:

  • Susan Finn, PhD, RD, and Jim Finn, MBA, for their gift to fund a history of the American Dietetic Association, which will celebrate its centennial in 2017
  • The Commission on Dietetic Registration for its contribution to the CDR Doctoral Scholarship
  • The Legacy of the late Col. Katharine Manchester, RTD, RD, for her passion for the dietetics profession and her visionary leadership of the ADA Foundation
  • The Texas Association of Local WIC Directors for their contribution to establish the Texas Association of Local WIC Directors Scholarship Fund
  • Neva H. Cochran. MS, RD, LD, for her contribution to establish the Frederick Green Memorial Internship in Nutrition Communications.

The ADA Foundation's 2010 Corporate Award will be presented to the National Dairy Council. The award is given each year to a corporation or group that has supported the Foundation through the Scholarship and Awards Program, Research Endowment, Healthy Weight for Kids Initiative, Annual Fund or activities of ADA through the Foundation. The support may come in the form of financial contributions, organizational service or committee involvement. The National Dairy Council is a corporate partner of ADA and a supporter of the ADA Foundation, including the new "Kids Eat Right" initiative.

The ADAF Gala is sponsored by The Beef Checkoff through the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, ADA Partner ARAMARK, FNCE Event Sponsor ConAgra Foods and Welch's.

Each year, more than 10,000 registered dietitians, nutrition science researchers, policy makers, health-care providers and industry leaders attend ADA's Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo, which features more than 100 research and educational presentations, lectures, debates, panel discussions and culinary demonstrations and more than 400 exhibitors from corporations, government and nonprofit agencies showcase new consumer food products and nutrition education materials.
