Synopsis of the Diet Plan
Tosca Reno promotes clean eating, which eliminates highly processed or refined foods. As a columnist for Oxygen magazine, she claims it is the food we eat that is responsible for shaping the wide variety of body types available. Her own transformation came when she reached her highest weight of over 200 pounds and began training to participate in body-building competitions. Meal plans, recipes and grocery lists are provided to help readers embrace the "eat clean" philosophy. Additionally, there is a website available with testimonials and new recipes.
Nutritional Pros and Cons
It is easy to see why readers would embrace the "eat clean" philosophy. Reno is motivating, upbeat and inspiring. Although she claims diet is responsible for her transformation, exercise is clearly a significant key to her success as well. Strength training is a valuable addition to her body transformation and it is the combination of diet and exercise that are the winning combination, not her diet philosophy alone. Her nutrition information is a combination of fact and fiction. Her message about breakfast is one all registered dietitians could recommend: whole-grain cereal with fresh fruit and a source of lean protein. But when recommending lean protein she suggests unsalted nuts and starchy carbohydrates from vegetable sources as protein alternatives such as bananas and carrots. Meals plans recommend up to 18 ounces of animal protein per day, providing more than 2 grams/kg for the average woman. Similar examples of fact and fiction are found throughout the book.
The book is motivational and would inspire some readers to make lifestyle changes. Reno should partner with a registered dietitian to add sound evidence-based nutrition recommendations for her website and the next update to the Eat-Clean Diet.
