Educational Opportunities with HIMSS

(Professional Education, HITECH Areas for Involvement) Permanent link   All Posts

As you learn more and more about informatics, you’ve probably become at least somewhat familiar with HIMSS, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.  You’re likely also aware that the data from the most recent Nutrition Informatics Survey of ADA members was compiled and analyzed by HIMSS Analytics.  HIMSS Analytics is a not-for-profit subsidiary of HIMSS and if you’ve taken the 10x10 course, you’re certainly familiar with HIMSS Analytics’ well-known EMR Adoption Model

ADA’s relationship with HIMSS is taking another step forward in a way that can benefit you directly.  A collaboration agreement between our two organizations was recently signed which will open the door for all types of resource sharing, including opportunities for continuing education in informatics.  I joined HIMSS a few months ago and I’m amazed at the frequency that they host webinars on very timely topics like Meaningful Use.  Even if you don’t join HIMSS, though, this new collaboration will create abundant new avenues to increase your knowledge in informatics.  This agreement helps fulfill several of the strategic priorities of ADA’s Nutrition Informatics Committee, including offering continuing professional education opportunities, developing specific nutrition informatics competencies, and participating in interagency informatics networking. I have no doubt that our new formalized relationship with HIMSS will be a rich and mutually beneficial one.
