According to a recent Markle Foundation Survey on Health in a Networked Life, found that 85 percent of the public and 36% of physicians were not very or not at all familiar with the HITECH Act Incentive Program for doctors and Hospitals. As a matter of coincidence, I have visited three physicians recently and found them in completely different stages: one who is skeptical and has not implemented an EHR, one who just implemented one in January 2011 and is waiting to see how the incentive payments roll, and one who has used an electronic health record for a couple of years and is working on obtaining incentive payments. It should come as no surprise that Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) (who manages the incentive program) and the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC), who coordinates HITECH-- are working to spread the word.
