On Harmonization

On several occasions, I have written how the framework of the HITECH Act is driving the harmonization of standards.  With over 200 different health care terminologies to choose from, we have to agree on a general set in order to make interoperability a reality. Interoperability is simply—having health data follow the patient.  It sounds so much easier than it is. For that to occur, there has to be rules and an existing trust of those who manage the data.  There have been entire discussions on how to assure consumer/patient trust so that health data is at the right time, right place and used appropriately—thus the Trust Framework for Data Exchange. As I head into this Thanksgiving and read, listen and see stories of less than encouraging news about our world, I think of the “Trust Framework” and only wish we could successfully implement such a thing world-wide.  For the time being, perhaps focusing on areas of good, encouraging a day of peace for those engaged in discord and working on local improvements in health will do.  Best wishes for a harmonized Thanksgiving holiday weekend with trusted friends and family.
