Health Workforce Training Investment Continues

I have written previously about the Workforce Training grants (both University Based Training and Community College based training) provided through the HITECH Act. The goal is to train 51,000 individuals in various jobs (12 identified) over the next five years.

Yesterday, Health and Human Services (HHS) announced additional funding to support health care training across the country. Yet another great opportunity for support of the lifelong learning our profession subscribes to! Grants are awarded by state and Institution. I know of several RDs who are taking advantage of these grants –and would love to hear more!

Okay, I'd like to know how RDs are taking advantage of these grants? I looked for the state of Oklahoma. For the University of Oklahoma they looked like they were mainly for nursing. Can Nutritional Science Departments apply also?? Peggy Turner

Hi Peggy, Great question--both the University programs and the Community College Consortia training through HITECH have already been awarded. The programs on listed on the blog and the ONC website--students can apply to any under the requirements of each program. Between the two programs there are 12 different "positions" which a student can focus on. Many times these programs are out of nursing informatics programs, but are there to embrace the same support mechanism--training 51,000+ professionals to assist in the implementation of EHRs.
