The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics forms alliances with other organizations for special projects and to participate in coalitions with shared goals and objectives. A few of our current alliances include:

• The Healthier Generation Benefit, a joint initiative of the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation, announced the formation of the Alliance Healthcare Initiative, a collaborative effort with national medical associations, leading insurers and employers to offer comprehensive health benefits to children and families for the prevention, assessment, and treatment of childhood obesity. Through this program, doctors will be reimbursed for bringing children back for follow-up visits and for working with them on the adoption of healthy behaviors. Registered dietitians will also be reimbursed for providing in depth nutrition counseling over multiple visits to those children that are referred by their doctors. By working together, doctors and registered dietitians will help children and their families adopt healthier lifestyle habits to improve their health and weight.

• The Academy is a collaborating member of Action for Healthy Kids, a nationwide initiative dedicated to improving the health and educational performance of children through better nutrition and physical activity in schools. AFHK is organized into state teams who do health, physical activity, and nutrition promotion work in their states and local districts. The Academy is involved in advising the national office and many Academy members serve as volunteers on state teams. The Academy has submitted numerous resources for inclusion in AFHK "Resources to Improve Schools" database and serves as a reviewer for state grant applications and AFHK online resources.

• The US American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) is the largest sports medicine and exercise science organization in the world. More than 35,000 international, national, and regional members and certified professionals are dedicated to advancing and integrating scientific research to provide educational and practical applications of exercise science and sports medicine. Of note is ACSM's initiative, Exercise is Medicine, of which the Academy is a network member. ACSM's mission is to "promote and integrate scientific research, education, and practical applications of sports medicine and exercise science to maintain and enhance physical performance, fitness, health, and quality of life."

• International Confederation of Dietetic Associations is a confederation of national dietetic associations that together represent more than 160,000 dietetics professionals worldwide. ICDA supports national dietetic associations and their members beyond national and regional boundaries by achieving an integrated communications system, an enhanced image for the profession and increased awareness of standards of education, training and practice in dietetics. The Academy sits on the Board of Directors..

• The National Diabetes Education Program is a federally-funded program sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and includes over 200 partners at the federal, state and local levels, working together to improve the treatment and outcomes for people with diabetes, promote early diagnosis, and prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. The Academy is a partner organization and has representatives on several of the NDEP working committees.

• The US National Physical Activity Plan (NPAP) is a collection of organizations and individuals dedicated to developing a plan that will empower all Americans to be physically active every day. At work, home, school, and other settings, being physically active must be encouraged and made readily available. With a comprehensive network of resources, NPAP is focused on the goal of increasing physical activity nationwide. Currently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Prevention Research Center at the University of South Carolina, are providing the organizational infrastructure for The Plan. On May 3, 2010, the National Physical Activity Plan will officially kick off in Washington, DC.

• World Food Day is a worldwide event that increases awareness, understanding and informed year-around action to alleviate hunger. It is observed annually on October 16 in recognition of the founding of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in 1945. In the United States the endeavor is sponsored by 450 national, private voluntary organizations. The Academy is one of the sponsoring organizations.
