Talking Points for Discussing the Public Policy Workshop with Your Employer

Would you like to join the growing group of Academy members who have been able to develop and hone their public policy skills through the Academy's prestigious Public Policy Workshop? Here are six steps to help you discuss and obtain professional and financial support from your employer for this excellent opportunity to broaden your skills.

 

Step One

Request and schedule a meeting with your supervisor or director to discuss your interest in attending the 2014 Public Policy Workshop. Prepare for the meeting by defining your policy related competencies and skills needed in your current position.

 

Step Two

During the meeting, describe the importance of enhancing your policy competencies and how participation in the program will strengthen your performance in your organization. Refer to the Program Preview for additional information.

 

Step Three Detail your individual competencies and outline why you should be supported in attending this high level learning event:
  • Hear from prestigious speakers focused on the evolving public policy landscape
  • Improve communication skills through reality-based educational opportunities
  • Network and hear from other grassroots leaders
  • Provide a new opportunity for professional development and management practices for introductory, intermediate and advanced-level practitioners

 

Step Four

Send a thank you note to your employer for their consideration and support.

 

Step Five

Register to attend!

 

Step Six Upon return from the Public Policy Workshop, provide a one-page summary of your training and the direct knowledge you intend to apply to enhance your performance, your position and your team.
