As a Kids Eat Right campaign member and recipient of a mini-grant, I presented two Family Meals presentations, one to parents and one to teens. I had positive feedback about the presentations, especially about the importance of eating together and strategies for communication. The toolkit included a fun slide presentation, colorful and engaging, and the flow of the program allowed me to ask questions throughout and engage the participants.

In addition to being an RD, I am also a Chef. As a Chartwells Kids Eat Right mini-grant recipient, I did the Healthy Breakfast. Everywhere You Go. presentation to 6th-8th graders at schools in Detroit, about 200 students per presentation. Students were eager to share what they would choose for a healthy breakfast. In highlighting the benefits of a healthy breakfast, it was fun to share the simple tip that eating breakfast may help you get a better grade in math. This was a great example of the work RDs do every day, taking scientific data and interpreting it in a way that consumers understand.

As a recipient of one of the Kids Eat Right Family Meals Mini-Grants, I gave a presentation to over 100 Vietnamese youth at the Tobacco and Obesity Prevention Summit sponsored by the Vietnamese Culture and Science Association (VCSA) in Houston, TX. I modified the presentation to include some of their cultural foods and other commonly consumed foods and beverages. I think the kids and parents learned a lot and enjoyed knowing that some of their cultural cuisine is quite healthy, while some parts need to be consumed in moderation.

The Monday message is a great service to me and all those to whom I send it. I send it out every week to my organization’s 550 employees, which includes physicians, nurses and staff in 31 pediatric offices who see about 145,000 children each year. Many of the offices print out the Monday Message articles, recipes and tips for their patients. We also post them on our Facebook page. It would take me too much time for me to create something like the Monday message. This small service has provided valuable information, created awareness of dietitians as the nutrition experts and increased the demand for dietitian services. The Everyday Heroes should be the dietitians who support the website with their expertise and time. Kudos to you for a service well done.

The Family Meals toolkit helps give us that extra “push” to get out there and present. It helps our community view us as the expert and people are really interested in what we have to say! The Healthy Snacking toolkit has been a big hit, too, and I plan to do more presentations in the near future.

I had the privilege to give presentations on healthy snacking using the toolkit. I had a blast presenting to a group of fourth graders. They loved the interactive presentation! We had such a great conversation on healthy snacks. I can't wait to use these presentations again!

Thank you so much for this excellent opportunity. Using the Family Champions parent cooking workshop gave me the opportunity to teach over 30+ parents and students. This was the biggest turnout event that the Parents Teachers Association has ever had! At the event, there was a lot of participation from the parents, including from the round table discussions on healthy eating. Some parents after the presentation told me that they loved the simple meal food demonstration and the weekly meal suggestions.

Through the Chartwells Kids Eat Right Mini-Grant, we have been able to present on Healthy Breakfasts, Family Mealtimes and Healthy Snacking to children and parents at a variety of events in the Hays School District. The toolkits are very useful and I look forward to using them again in the future. One of my favorite parts about my job is getting to teach our students about nutrition in a hands-on way!

I had a wonderful experience as a Chartwells Kids Eat Right mini-grantee. I spoke with sophomores during high school health classes using the "Healthy Snacking" toolkit. The students were very interested and had a lot of great questions! Also, I brought Greek yogurt and granola for them to sample; almost everyone was willing to try it, and they all liked it! I also gave a "Family Champions" cooking class for staff at the same high school. We filled the room, and everyone had a good time. They gave me a lot of great feedback on how they enjoyed tasting the food, but also appreciated the healthy meal ideas that are quick and affordable.
