Nutrition has been a personal and professional passion of mine. I truly believe that the school setting is a critical environment for teaching youth good nutrition and healthy habits; from nutrition education to food demonstrations for both kids and parents. Thus, I was excited to be part of the Kids Eat Right RD Parent Empowerment Program in San Francisco!

I have been involved in school wellness and nutrition for over 20 years, but this is my first time representing a Kids Eat Right program, RD Parent Empowerment Program. This program is an engaging, simple and fun way to introduce easy healthy habits to parents and the whole school community! I am honored to be piloting the program!

Making quality nutrition a reality for all kids was a critical part of the Kids Eat Right and the National Dairy Council's Registered Dietitian mini-grants. Of the 50 RDs awarded, twenty were from Florida and worked in 35 Florida schools to implement the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, which encourages kids to make lifelong health changes. All 35 schools successfully applied and received grant funding (up to $4,000) to implement one healthy eating and physical activity FUTP60 "play." The Dairy Council of Florida greatly appreciated the dedication and unrelenting drive of these RDs. Their enthusiasm and nutrition expertise offered to schools generated program success and excitement from the schools, students, staff and parents.

As a recipient of the Kids Eat Right Fuel Up To Play60 RD mini-grant, I was able to help change the eating habits of the students and teachers of Dorsett Shoals Elementary School in a very positive way. Now, the students and teachers appreciate the vegetable and herb garden on the school premises and are willing to cook and eat healthy meals. The program is truly a grassroots community effort that has affected the health and lives of the Douglasville, Georgia area.

One of my passions is educating families about the concept of—and how to create—a healthy food environment. As an RD Coach with the Energy Balance 4 Kids with Play program, I share nutrition messages with students who then take these ideas home and share them with their families. These kids are empowered to make better individual choices regarding nutrition, and they also help create positive health changes in their homes.

As a Kids Eat Right Campaign Volunteer and registered dietitian for the RD Parent Empowerment Program, my primary focus is helping families make sustainable changes in their lifestyles, including developing better eating habits and increasing physical activity. Childhood obesity prevention starts with the family. Parents are often their children’s most important role model.

I love what I do as a Kids Eat Right volunteer! I am the Head RD Coach in Iowa for the Meet the Challenge! project, where RD Coaches are assisting schools with completing the HealthierUS School Challenge application. Kids are benefiting from the changes being made, including more nutrient dense school meals, valuable nutrition education and increased PE Teacher planned physical activity! Very rewarding!

The RD Parent Empowerment Project has been a fun and rewarding experience for me. I made new friends and learned so much from my colleagues. I met motivated school staff and parents who want to improve their own and their children's nutrition and eating habits. I am constantly inspired by the people I meet in this project.

As a Kids Eat Right Fuel Up To Play60 RD mini-grantee, I take great pride in educating our youth to eat healthier and participate in daily exercise. Knowing these children will grow up understanding the benefits of proper nutrition will help decrease obesity problems that face our younger generation. Feedback provided by students, teachers and parents acknowledges the hard work that goes into this program and the successful impact it has on their lives.
