Energy Balance 4 Kids with Play in California (EB4K with Play)

The Energy Balance 4 Kids with Play (EB4K with Play) is a program developed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation and Playworks with funding support from the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation (HWCF). EB4K With Play is an evidenced-based program that promotes nutrition, physical activity, and energy balance knowledge and behavior changes in kids led by Registered Dietitian (RD) Nutrition Coaches and Recess Coaches. The EB4K with Play program in California is a modified version of EB4K, which has reached thousands of children in Kansas City and the greater Des Moines area.

About the Program

Energy Balance 4 Kids with Play 2013-2014

The EB4K with Play program is implementing and evaluating an in-class, PE, and cafeteria energy balance curriculum in two low-income elementary schools in the West Contra Costa School District in Richmond, California: Lake and Tara Hills. The behaviors promoted in EB4K with Play are the ones research shows to be the strongest indicators of a healthy diet and healthy body weight:

  • Increased consumption of fruits, vegetables and fat-free or low-fat dairy products
  • Regular breakfast consumption
  • Improved snack choices
  • Decreased consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages
  • Fewer meals eaten away from home
  • Decreased screen time
  • At least 60 minutes of physical activity a day
