ANDPAC Congressional Support SNAP and SNAP-Ed Funding in Farm Bill
Many members of Congress who are supported by the Academy's Political Action Committee have been active in the debate surrounding the nutrition programs in the Farm Bill.
Rep. Betty McCollum (Minn.) delivered an important statement on the need for all Americans to have access to healthy, safe food.
The Academy's 2013 Public Policy Leadership Award recipient, Rep. Jim McGovern (Mass.), gave his 12th speech to Congress urging preservation of funding for SNAP, which helps feed 47 million Americans.
Academy staff attended two fundraising events for members of Congress who work on the Farm Bill. At these events, Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) and Rep. Ann McLane Kuster (N.H.) spoke with Academy staff who expressed the importance of maintaining SNAP-Ed funding in the Farm Bill.

Members Discuss Nutrition Policy with Congress: You Can, Too!
Thanks to the Academy's Political Action Committee, California Dietetic Association members recently attended a fundraiser for one of their members in Congress, Rep. Doris Matsui.
CDA members Sue Foerster, MPH, RD, and Judy Gould, MA, MS, RD, spoke with Rep. Matsui and her staff about critical nutrition legislation, including the Farm Bill, which provides nutrition education for SNAP participants and the Older American's Act, which supports essential senior nutrition programs.
Gould was complimentary of Foerster, a member of the Legislative and Public Policy Committee, who she deemed as "highly knowledgeable about pertinent nutrition policy due to her recent attendance at the Academy's Public Policy Workshop." Rep. Matsui encouraged members to schedule a meeting with her office to further discuss these key nutrition issues.
Foerster and Gould are not done yet. They plan to work with ANDPAC on more opportunities to speak with other California representatives to discuss the importance of nutrition programs and services. SNAP-Ed and the Older Americans Act translate into jobs for dietitians not only in California, but nationwide.

ANDPAC at Affiliate, DPG Meetings: What Are You Willing to Give?
Attendees at the 6th Weight Management Dietetics Practice Group Symposium last month raised nearly $800 for the Academy's Political Action Committee.
Academy President Ethan A. Bergman, PhD, RDN, CD, FADA, spoke to nearly 400 members about the importance of ANDPAC, challenging attendees to support its advocacy activities. In addition, a member leader who was inspired by this year's Public Policy Workshop motivated the WM DPG to raffle off a 2014 WM Symposium registration to any member who contributed $25 or more to ANDPAC or the Academy's Foundation. The camaraderie among members was elevated when the winner of the drawing graciously gave her free registration to a fellow student. (May 1, 2013)
